Sunday, November 15th, 4.30pm, Sandalwood Yards, 179 Avon Tce, York York in the Illustrated London News A strange engraving of York appeared on the front cover of the 28 February 1857 edition of the Illustrated London News. Mt Bakewell towers over the town in a threatening way. In the drawing is a church with a spire which did not exist. In the middle of the town is a huge windmill. Who did the drawing on which the engraving was based? When was it drawn? What buildings are shown and what has happened to them? Rob Garton Smith will give a sundowner presentation on Saturday 14 November at 4:30 pm at the Sandalwood Gallery, to be followed by drinks and nibbles. Free to Members. $5.00 for non-members.
